It just wouldn’t be Christmas in Dublin without the Gaiety Panto, a staple childhood memory for of us all. More than anything, we dreamed of being in the panto and no school year was complete without a trip to see it.
John and Michael Gunn first brought the pantomime to the Gaiety Theatre back in 1873 and since then it has become a firm favourite in the Irish theatre scene. Generally performed over Christmas and New Year, with audiences mostly made up of children and their parents. The panto is a fun filled performance incorporating song, dance, buffoonery, slapstick, cross-dressing, in-jokes and audience participation. The panto always promises to be entertaining for both children and adults, with a great mix of humour to keep everyone with a smile on their face.
This year’s Gaiety panto is an adaptation of the classic fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood And The Big Bad Wolf, but this Brothers Grimm classic will be filled with panto laughs and fun! Expect lots of ‘he’s behind you’ and ‘look out for the big bad wolf!’
The panto is a wonderful experience for the whole family and with showings at 1.30pm and 6.30pm on Saturdays and 1.00pm and 5.30pm Sundays it is absolutely perfect for a fun family filled day out. There is also showings on every evening during the week at 6.30.
If you have never been then it is definitely worth a trip, you’ll be looking forward to next year’s before you even leave!
