The Winding Stair (named after the Yeats poem) is located on Lower Ormond Quay, just across the River Liffey from the Clarence Hotel and is one of the oldest surviving book shops in Dublin. The front of the shop holds new books, while the back houses an array of second hand ones. They stock an extensive range of books, including many by Irish authors as well as literary magazines, zines, cards, notebooks and mugs. The staff are very friendly and helpful, they’ll even order a book in for you if they don’t have it! After some browsing you can sit down by the front window and enjoy a tea, coffee or glass of wine as you people watch over the ever bustling Quays. And if you’re hungry, head upstairs via the Winding Stair’s winding staircase to their lovely restaurant. Here you can enjoy homely Irish food and choose from an array of local and internationally brewed beers and an extensive selection of carefully chosen wines, all served by charming staff and in warm and inviting surroundings. The Winding Stair is not to be missed, especially for the artistic and creative, as you can be sure many a song and story were penned within the walls of this hidden gem, filled with Irish history and culture.
